The Design and Development of a Collaborative Online Inpatient Asthma Module

Erik Mikkelsen, MD, MEd
Children's Respiratory and Critical Care Specialists

The use of online learning in the medical field has been occurring for nearly twenty years. Studies have shown that collaborative online learning is not only desired by adult learners, but it is also an effective method of knowledge transfer. This study explores the creation of a collaborative online module to teach inpatient asthma management skills to pediatric residents, who have not done a collaborative module in the past. The creation of the tools, surveys, and testing material are described, in addition to the module material itself. There is also an analysis of the residents’ perception of and use of the module.
